The Commonwealth Secretary-General, the Rt Hon Patricia Scotland, KC, will make her first official visit to Togo, one of the organisation’s newest members, next week.
During her two-day visit, beginning on 15 July, Secretary-General Scotland will meet with President Faure Gnassingbé, Prime Minister Victoire Tomegah Dogbé, and members of the National Assembly, to understand Togo’s priorities, strengthen relationships, and explore areas of mutual cooperation.
Ahead of her visit, Secretary-General Scotland said:
“This visit will enable Togo and the Commonwealth to take the next important step forward together. I am looking forward to seeing the President, the Prime Minister, members of the Government and the National Assembly.
“We have a great opportunity to deepen engagement with Togo and its people, and discuss how the Commonwealth Secretariat can support the government in areas of governance, trade and digitisation.
“I will also brief the government on the upcoming Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) set to take place in Samoa, and support Togo’s participation at their first CHOGM as a member country.”
During her visit, the Secretary-General will also meet with members of the political opposition, civil society organisations, and youth, to highlight the opportunities that Commonwealth membership brings for national cohesion, stability and growth.
Togo formally joined the Commonwealth in June 2022, and its flag was ceremonially first raised at Marlborough House, the Commonwealth Headquarters in London in October of the same year.
