The Solomon Islands and New Zealand’s senior representatives have successfully concluded their two-day negotiations to renew the Air Service Agreement (ASA) between the two nations, replacing the old agreement signed in 1990.
The main objective of the new agreement is to establish a framework for collaboration in the aviation sector between the Solomon Islands and New Zealand. It aims to adopt modern practices in the aviation industry and reflects the common goal of strengthening the alliance and promoting cooperation in air connectivity between the two nations.
On 20 July 2023 the consolidated text of the revised agreement was signed in Honiara. Mr. Collin Beck, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and External Trade, represented the Solomon Islands, while Ms. Sonya van der Geer, the Chief Air Rights Negotiator and Principal Adviser of the Ministry of Transport, represented New Zealand.

During the signing ceremony, Permanent Secretary Beck expressed his belief that the new ASA will usher in a new era of collaboration and connection, further enhancing the bilateral ties between the Solomon Islands and New Zealand. He also acknowledged the contributions of various Solomon Islands aviation stakeholders, including Solomon Airlines Limited, the Ministry of Communication & Aviation, the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, and the Civil Aviation Authority of Solomon Islands, who were all part of the delegation and played a crucial role in the success of the negotiations.
The Solomon Islands expects that the new ASA framework will bring about greater opportunities for intercultural exchange, improved economic development, and the promotion of commercial ventures.
In addition to the actual agreement, the Chief Negotiators also signed a Memorandum of Arrangement. This note will be presented to their respective governments for approval and authorisation to sign the new Air Service Agreement.
