The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Gabon, Michael Moussa Adamo, has passed away after suffering a heart attack during a cabinet meeting.
Despite efforts by specialists, Adamo was unable to be revived and passed away at a military hospital last 20 January.
Adamo, who was born in the north-eastern town of Makokou, Gabon in 1961, had a career in public service spanning several decades.
He began his career as a presenter on national television before moving on to work in government. In 2000, he was appointed as chief of staff for the Defence Minister, and later served as a special advisor to President Ali Bongo Ondimba. After a decade as Gabon’s ambassador to the United States, Adamo held positions as both Defence and Foreign Minister.
President Bongo took to Twitter to express his condolences and remember Adamo as “a great diplomat, a true statesman” and “a friend, loyal and faithful, on whom I have always been able to count.”
The Commonwealth marked Gabon’s entry with a special flag-raising ceremony at Marlborough House, London on 17 September 2022.
