Known as Independence and Republic Day, 12th March marks the day Mauritius gained their independence from Britain in 1968 and becoming a republic in 1992 exactly 24 years later.
On the same day as their independence, Mauritius became the 28th country to join the Commonwealth.
The day is celebrated as a public holiday and Mauritians will show their pride in their nation with military parades, displaying their flag across the island and a flag-raising ceremony held in Champs de Mars. Local communities will gather for smaller festivities to celebrate the anniversary of their independence from Britain.
Mauritius hosted the 18th Conference of Commonwealth Education Ministers in Port Louis in August 2012.
After the 1967 General Election, Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam (SSR) became the first Prime Minister of Mauritius, he was re-elected in the 1976 General Election and was in office for a total of 14 years.
