The Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) Coordination Commission will undertake its latest review of Birmingham 2022 preparations this week.
The Coordination Commission (CoCom) is responsible for delivery oversight of the Commonwealth Games and tasked with monitoring the Games to ensure it is delivered to scope, schedule and budget.
The three-day CoCom will include inspection visits of key Birmingham 2022 venues, including Alexander Stadium and the Sandwell Aquatics Centre.
This CoCom will follow a hybrid in-person, virtual model, in what will be the seventh CGF CoCom review of Birmingham 2022 and the penultimate visit to the region. CGF CoCom Chair Bruce Robertson of Canada will lead the CoCom virtually, with CGF President Dame Louise Martin heading the delegation that will be in Birmingham in-person.
The CoCom members include Association of Summer Olympic International Federations (ASOIF) Executive Director Andrew Ryan, CGF Chief Operating Officer Darren Hall, former Glasgow City Council Director of Governance and Solicitor to the Council Carole Forrest and Commonwealth Games Scotland Head of Games Operations Elinor Middlemiss.
The upcoming CoCom will also be the first formal visit to Birmingham of new CGF CEO Katie Sadleir, who will be part of the delegation in the West Midlands.
Commonwealth Games Federation President, Dame Louise Martin DBE, said, “the CGF CoCom are delighted to be back in Birmingham and the West Midlands in person to review the progress the Organising Committee and Partners. The 2022 Commonwealth Games, the biggest sporting event staged in the UK in a decade, are now just eight months away. This means we are at the most crucial stage of preparations for the multi-sport competition and efforts need to continue at pace.”
CGF CoCom Chair, Bruce Robertson, said, “It is clear Birmingham 2022 has made excellent progress over the last 12 months and successfully navigated the big challenges they have faced to date. However, that same progress needs to be maintained to ensure the best possible experience for athletes, staff and fans, so we look forward to further updates on all key operational areas across this important week.”
