The Gambia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ousainu Darboe, marked the return of the West African country to the Commonwealth in a press briefing on February 9, 2018, describing the organisation as a catalyst and model of international cooperation.
The Minister welcomed a Commonwealth team in the capital city, Banjul, who are supporting The Gambia’s reintegration.
Political Affairs Officer for Africa, Lindiwe Maleleka, represented the Commonwealth at the event and presented a copy of the Commonwealth charter to Minister Darboe.
Commonwealth High Commissioners based in The Gambia also attended the briefing, as did several senior government officials.
Minister Darboe described the country’s re-entry to the group of mostly former British Empire territories as an important milestone in its history.
He added: “The Commonwealth way is to seek consensus through consultation and the sharing of experience, especially through practical co-operation.
“It is uniquely placed to serve as a model and as a catalyst for new forms of friendship and cooperation.
“The Commonwealth has a unique role to play in the democratisation of The Gambia which this new Government has embarked upon since assuming office.”
